An Anti-inflammatory Life

An Anti-inflammatory Life

My Wellness Week in Woman & Home

Hi Everyone! I was asked about what a week in my life looks like for Woman & Home. You can read my contribution to the column “My Wellness Week” in the British Magazine here. There are other media interviews that you may be interested in reading, covering an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, nutrition, chronic inflammation, health advice, and so on. Do take a look: Reduce Inflammation for a Healthy Mind, Healing My Ulcerative Colitis & Rare Blood Disorder, & How to Reduce Inflammation. I have also had lots of fun as a guest on podcasts with Russ Kane and Chantal Rickards, OBE on Men’s Radio, Mo Gawfat’s Podcast, Sandro Forte Podcast, and Em Roberts on The Big Move, for instance. I hope you laugh, too! Have a wonderful day!

What Diet Reduces Anxiety?

The Brain-gut Connection

60% of an adult’s neurotransmitters are located in the gut, and 80% of children’s. The brain-gut link has been written about extensively over the past ten years, and we have made massive progress in that field. When I was first diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I tried the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD), which was also used to improve symptoms for children with autism. I spent hours researching diets, the microbiome, and this link. I came to realize that our mood, our digestion, and our immune system are intertwined. It has made me realize how strong the brain-gut link is. Unfortunately, the SCD didn’t work for me, and it ultimately took me over ten years to perfect my low inflammation and gut health lifestyle. The food you eat daily, your stress levels, and the exercise you do massively impact your gut flora and your inflammation levels. Brain cells have been proven to get inflamed, so if you suffer from anxiety or depression, living a low-inflammation lifestyle can help improve your symptoms. An entire section of the Eat Burn Sleep platform is dedicated to mental wellness. 70% of our immune system (GALT – Gut Associated Lymphoid Tissue) is located in our guts, and 60% of our neurotransmitters. Then, there is a powerful link between exercise and inflammation. Some forms of exercise are inflammatory, while others are anti-inflammatory. Our mind, our body, how we move, how we deal with stress, and how we eat are all linked, and all impact each other. All non-communicable diseases (responsible for 71% of deaths worldwide) are linked to chronic inflammation -hence to gut health; see the video on this topic on my youtube channel. These include depression, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, heart attacks, auto-immune issues, psoriasis, asthma, diabetes, etc. It can sound overwhelming, and one might find it hard to start somewhere. I felt overwhelmed all those years ago, almost wanting to give up! I had no choice but to find a solution to this, which I could apply to my daily life as a busy mum of two young boys! But in a way, what saved me was the fact that my body wasn’t responding to medical treatment, and I ended up at one point being kept alive with weekly blood transfusions. I have come up with a simple, achievable, sustainable lifestyle, which has yielded tremendous results for many people (check out the reviews here). I share it all on the Eat Burn Sleep platform, as well as regular exclusive content and new recipes. I hope the Eat Burn Sleep platform helps you, as it has helped me! Remember to look after yourself without over-obsessing. The Eat Burn Sleep lifestyle isn’t about perfection but about damage limitation. Yalda x

Is Intermittent Fasting Good for You?

Intermittent Fasting Explained

So many people regularly ask me if intermittent fasting is good or bad for you. In the 7-day plan, I originally included it in order to reduce one’s appetite over a short period and give the digestive system a break for a week. Some people had fantastic results with it over six months or so (generally, from my observation, the positive effects do not seem to last longer, but again, I could be mistaken). Some people feel TERRIBLE on it and GAIN WEIGHT. I have a friend who gained 4 kilos (about 8 pounds) doing it! These conflicting results got me to research it extensively. I haven’t found anybody online or offline (I asked many experienced doctors and other nutritionists) who could explain this. As you might have noticed by now, I am a problem fixer, and I decided to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. So, here is it for you, my dot-connecting analysis on the effects of intermittent fasting!

What Happens When We Fast?

  • We produce Human Growth Hormone which has many benefits. HGH helps build and repair muscle, boost metabolism, repair skin, slow down aging, and burn fat.
  • We also produce cortisol which has harmful effects on the body and mind. Cortisol is the stress hormone (the one released in a flight or fight situation). Elevated cortisol levels lead to weight gain(mainly in the face and abdomen) and anxiety; it can lower our metabolism and immune system, increase inflammation, increase blood pressure, etc.
Two things happen simultaneously, one positive and one negative, regarding weight loss.   In some people, the weight-loss element (HGH) is probably more pronounced, while the weight-gain element (cortisol) is more accentuated in others. This is the reason why results differ depending on the individual! However, I have noticed that intermittent fasting is generally more beneficial for men than women. My take on it is that ancestrally, men would go hunting and would be exposed to a longer fasting period than women who would look after children and probably have some food to eat. Also, women have much more going on hormonally than men, and playing with our hormones, like intermittent fasting, can be more disruptive to us! Indeed, fasting can greatly affect hormones, especially for people with PCOS, thyroid issues, endometriosis, and diabetes. As a result, I have not included intermittent fasting in the Eat Burn Sleep lifestyle, and I cover all you need to know about what you need to eat and at what time of the day in order to maximize weight loss, gut health, and hormonal health!

Top 5 Beauty Tips From Clémence von Mueffling

A Conversation with Clémence von Mueffling

I hope you enjoy my special guest’s wonderful French beauty tips. Clémence von Mueffling joined me for a weekly LIVE on Instagram, which so many of you absolutely loved. She shared wonderful French beauty tips from her book Ageless beauty. Her tips are affordable, easy to implement, and oh-so valuable in an era where we seem to have disconnected from natural beauty. Of course, beauty comes from within. A low-inflammation lifestyle does support beautiful skin. Our skin is our biggest organ, which is affected by inflammation. Inflammation causes aging, acne, and all sorts of skin issues. It is the same with hair. Gut health and low inflammation are crucial for absorbing nutrients and having beautiful, shiny, thick hair. Aside from the above, here are Clémence’s 5 top tips from our live:
  1. Double Cleansing – Clémence recommends cleansing your skin twice in the evening. You can use the same product, like milk or micellar water. Or different products, like micellar water, first followed by cleansing milk. Or an oil followed by milk or micellar water etc. The first cleanse removes your makeup and the second cleanse actually gets to the pores and properly removes all the impurities. She suggested voiding foams as they are too harsh for the skin.
  2. Ideal hair washing routine – Her sister has the most beautiful hair and always brushes it before washing it, to run the sebum through her locks and protect them from chemicals. She uses a small amount of shampoo, which has no sulfates or parabens (and might not foam), only on the roots. She rinses well and removes excess water from her hair before applying conditioner on the ends only. She then proceeds to rinse her hair well, towel dry it gently, and let it air dry as long as possible before blow-drying it on low to medium heat.
  3. Her favorite products – Clémence loves a French pharmacy and products from brands like La Roche Posay, Avène, Bioderma, Décleor, etc. Her favorite non-invasive treatment is the microcurrent like the NuFace Mini Facial toning device.
  4. The side effects of botox and fillers – Clémence interviewed some of the top French plastic surgeons and dermatologists. She explained that people who have fillers stretch their skins. Once the skin is stretched, it is very difficult to reverse, hence becoming “addicted” to fillers and needing more to achieve that smooth skin. It effectively becomes a vicious circle. The same goes for botox. The body gets used to it, and as time goes by, top-ups need to be increased in frequency and volume.
  5. Work on your posture and avoid high-impact exercise – Clémence pointed out one of the Eat Burn Sleep main ethos when it comes to exercise. High-impact exercise is inflammatory, and it is crucial to work on posture to look taller, leaner and also improve digestion (more on this topic soon from myself!).
  6. She recommended yoga and pilates over HITT, walking over running. Exactly what I preach! Some forms of yoga and pilates are better than others. I will share all of this soon! Stay tuned 🙂
Make sure to go and check Clémence’s website and her Instagram page! Wishing you a wonderful day!
